Photo Book for Crowland Peterborough

Photo Book Comments, Photo News No Photo Comments »

Self-confessed history buff John Kemmery is appealing for help to uncover Crowland in Peterborough’s past.
When Mr Kemmery was asked by his wife, Sheila, to trace her family history, he never imagined it would lead to a 134-page photo book on The Great Floods of 1947 which hit the large village.

But three years on, and Mr Kemmery, of Walton Park, Walton, Peterborough, has uncovered many snippets of history of life in Crowland in 1947, when 20sq miles were submerged in water.

His work has unearthed hundreds of photographs of Crowland people working hard to stop the floods spreading. And now the only thing stopping Mr Kemmery from publishing his book is putting names to the faces in the photos.

Now he is urging residents in Crowland and Peterborough who might be able to help, to get in touch with him as soon as possible.

And when the enormous task is completed, he intends to donate the proceeds from his book to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Mr Kemmery (64), who is also the Poppy Appeal organiser for the Yaxley branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “I was researching my family history when Sheila, who was born and bred in Crowland, asked if I would search her maiden name, Limming.

“While looking on the internet, I found some details about her father and grandfather and was then sent a photo of her in a pram during the 1947 floods.

“From that moment on, more and more people began sending me pictures of the floods, and then a friend suggested I write a book on them. I started with about 40 pages and, since then, I have been bombarded with letters, e-mails and pictures from people who want to contribute to the photo book.

“I now have about 100 photos, of which between 60 and 80 need names put to faces

“The floods were terrible and came right into Peterborough. Houses around the Crowland’s Trinity bridge were flooded to their upstairs bedrooms.

“I have learned so much about the floods and how people rallied round to help one another and build flood defences, with the army and even prisoners helping.

“Other interesting facts include how the army made pathways into the town so stones from Helpston quarry could be brought in to help support the bridge. It also believed one of the army’s tanks sank in the River Welland, and it is said to be there today.”

Anyone who can help Mr Kemmery can call him on 01733 700516, or e-mail john.kemmery@ntlworld.com.

Kutcher 'angers execs over on-set snapping'

Ashton Kutcher has reportedly irritated movie executives by taking photos on a film-set.

The 31-year-old actor walked onto a set of a Hollywood studio last week and decided to document his visit on his camera, the Daily Star Sunday reports.

Movie bosses feared that Kutcher would post the images online for his millions of fans to view.

Kutcher told Fox News: “I got in trouble twice today man! I’ve got a camera and I post stuff on the internet with my camera just like any other Joe posts on the internet with his camera. I went on a studio lot today with a camera and they were like ‘You can’t shoot here’.

“I was like, ‘What are you talking about? I’m just shooting, there is a fan bus going right now shooting on the lot and they are shooting all kinds and they are going to post those on Facebook’.”

He added: “I’m just doing the same thing they are doing! They don’t think I am doing the same thing but I am doing the same thing.”

Andy and Caroline Bell from the Borders have raised over £3,000 to make a photo book for new parents

Caroline says, “When my son Cameron was born I received lots of information booklets about Down’s syndrome. Although this was helpful, sometimes it was more than I could take in. I then came across a booklet called ‘Just Kids’ which had lots of great pictures of children with Down’s syndrome, just getting on with their lives. This booklet gave me a lot of strength and hope for Cameron’s future.”

We want to create a similar booklet containing photographs showing our children with Down’s syndrome having fun and living life to the full. If you have a photo that you would like to see in print and grant permission for us to use according to our terms and conditions, please email it to lou@dsscotland.org.uk. Don’t forget to include a paragraph about the photo and make sure you keep original size when sending it.

Amy Adams Peachy Make-up

A Gossip and a Laugh News No Photo Comments »

I expect we’ll be seeing lots of red-carpet looks from Amy Adams, as her latest flick, Julie and Julia will be released in theaters next Friday. At last night’s NYC premiere, Amy amped up the volume with some bouncy waves and a warm, glowing face. “We went for a steel and copper smokey lid, gorgeous full lashes, a peachy cheek, and a golden amber lip,” said CoverGirl celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern, who created the look.

“Last night Amy wore a gorgeous full-length Carolina Herrera gown with a charcoal and white pattern speckled with gold beading. So I borrowed from that exquisite color palette,” Stern said. Are you looking for tips on how to re-create this peachy palette? Find out how to get Amy’s universally flattering look after the jump.

  • Cheeks: To give the cheeks a warm glow, Stern used CoverGirl’s new Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach.
  • Eyes: To create a base, Stern combined Shu Uemura’s Cream Eye Shadow in P Taupe  with Vincent Longo’s Liquid Shadow in Silky Orange . Next, she used both shades of Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Brumes , and applied on top of the base. Then, she smudged CoverGirl’s new Exact Eyelights Eyeliner in Radiant Sapphire on the outer corner of the lower lash line. For some shimmer, she dabbed Shu Uemura Pressed Eye Shadow in ME gold 350 on the inner V.
  • Lips: To tie it all together, Stern used Outlast Lipstain in Cinnamon Smile as a stain, along with a touch of Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss  on top

Ten top tips – Great Holiday Pics

10 Top Tips to Getting Great Holiday Photos

Do you ever get back from a fantastic holiday disappointed with the photos you’ve taken? Do your holiday snaps fail to live up to the exotic locations you visited? Blurred objects, wonky horizons, subjects with parts cropped off to mention but a few of the commonest ailments.

Well don’t worry. With a little help and advice we can all take pictures of which we can be justifiably proud. It does not matter how basic your camera is, it is the person that takes great photos not the camera. Good results can be achieved even with the camera in a mobile phone if some basic guidelines are followed.

Get sharp pictures by avoiding camera shake. Frame your shot, control your breathing – I find gently exhaling as I take the photo helps – and gently squeeze the shutter button. Steady yourself by leaning or resting on any available solid objects such as tables, doorways, walls, trees, fences etc. If there is nothing available stand with your legs a little way apart and tuck your elbows into your body as this will help stabilise the camera as much as possible.

Frame the shot carefully. How many times have we seen trees or lampposts growing out of people’s heads or with the tops of their heads cut off by the frame of the photo? Keep objects, including fingers away from the lens of the camera. Easily done if you have a camera with a view finder where you do not see through the actual lens of the camera.

Compose your photos for added interest. Use strong lines within the composition to lead the viewers’ eye into the shot, such as a path or road, to a focal point. Try to find something to add foreground interest in wider scenic views such as a plant or rock. Pretty much anything will do. Try turning the camera on its side for portrait format pictures or tilting it to add drama to your photos.

Look for details in objects and locations for example the texture in rippled sand or the patterns in local fabrics. Closer shots of objects that are common to the area you are staying in such as pottery, local plants or architectural details can often say as much about the place as panoramic postcard type shots.

Take photos in the early morning light or wait for the hour before sunset. The light at this time of day is much warmer than the harsh blue light of midday and will be much more atmospheric. Strong side lighting from a sun low in the sky can also produce interesting shadows within the landscape.

Get up early – I can hear you groaning – and capture the deserted beach or local town. Usually full of tourists, holiday destinations change character when empty of people and you may be able to take home some different photos of a well known location.

Move in closer to your subject. Really fill the frame with the object your are photographing. Many times I have ended up with a photo that does not capture the essence of the subject as it is lost within other distracting elements. So move in close and then closer still and photograph from different angles to get the most powerful image.

Take photographs of the local inhabitants but ask permission first. It can be quite daunting but it will avoid causing offence on personal, cultural or religious grounds. Most people are happy to oblige and interacting with the locals will enrich your holiday experience as well as provide you with great photos.

If the weather is bad get out and take photos. On many occasions I have seen beautiful atmospheric shots taken in dull rainy weather. It changes the character of a place and provides a different view than the normal one. If you are at the coast and the weather turns stormy you are in luck. Crashing waves and dramatic skies make for awesome images.

Use a frame within a frame. What I mean is use some thing like a doorway or a window to create a frame around your subject. Other ways could be to use trees or plants, the entrance to a street or opening to a square to frame a shot. These pictures can be very effective as they allow the viewer to place themselves within the photo and be part of the scene as you saw it.

Make a statement with your photos. Photograph the old and new next to each other. The modern and the traditional, decay and vitality, rubbish in a tidy place, poverty in the midst of riches. This sort of picture can tell the story behind the location and some are easily worth a thousand words.

Look for strong graphic images such as silhouettes at sunset or sunrise, dramatic combinations of colours, patterns of line and form. This sort of picture may end up being completely abstract but very interesting and satisfying all the same.

Use the sky. Very often the sky can be as interesting as the landscape beneath. Think sunsets and sunrises, storm clouds, fluffy summer clouds, single clouds, unusual shaped clouds etc. Balance the sky with what is in the landscape. It there is not much interest on the ground place the horizon low in the frame and include more sky and visa versa.

If you have a digital camera then you can check the shot that you have just taken and correct any mistakes as you go. Use this facility to edit your photos and delete those that you don’t like to save storage space on the memory.

My final words are experiment, get involved, have fun. Don’t be too stiff, relax and get into it. With digital cameras you can take as many photos as you want and just keep the good ones.

Finally – When you return, download reflectionsofyou.co.uk free software and create a photo book to share with family and friends.  www.reflectionsofyou.co.uk

    Personalised Wedding Calendar – Gift

Personalised Calendars Comments No Photo Comments »

Our favourite and most unique gift which we received as a wedding gift was a personalised calendar.  The cover picture (below) is brilliant – a diary page on the date we got married with a personal message ‘absolutely brilliant’.  This is something which we will use all through the first year of marriage.  Seeing my wife’s new surname displayed in the images throughout the calendar was also lovely.  I am also considering having reflectionsofyou.co.uk putting all our calendar images onto a large format display for on a wall in our bedroom.  Thank you to reflectionsofyou.co.uk – made a bride & groom very happy.  Guess what we will be buying for friends & family wedding gifts in the future.wedding calendar product image

Wedding Gifts- Couple Get 24 Toasters

A Gossip and a Laugh News No Photo Comments »
Claire and Stuart Linley have now returned 23 of the toasters, but decided to keep one.

Claire and Stuart Linley had asked for cash or vouchers from their 160 guests, which they planned to put toward a honeymoon.

They first realised something was up when they received a pile of gifts all in the same shaped box.

When Mrs Linley began to open the presents she was bemused to find that each one was a Tesco white 2-slice toaster.

Then it emerged the “coincidence” was actually a joke conceived on Mr Linley’s stag party in Ibiza.

The auto-electrician, 31, said: “The boys were asking me what I wanted as a wedding present, and I said either money or vouchers because I didn’t want to end up with a million toasters.

“Then one of my friends took it upon himself to tell everyone to buy us a toaster.

“On the morning when we came to open our presents I knew something was going on as I had had about 15 text messages asking if I was having toast for breakfast.”

The couple, who married at Howden Minster, East Yorkshire, last Saturday, have now returned 23 of the toasters, but decided to keep one.

Mrs Linley, 31, an estate agent, said: “When we went to open our presents and saw all the boxes were the same shape I thought, ‘this is quite strange’, and then we began to open them and it was toaster after toaster after toaster.

“It was hilarious really. Most of them were from Tesco and when we took them back to the store the staff couldn’t stop laughing.

“We did make beans on toast for lunch when we got home though.”
